The Truth behind Average Speed Cameras
In 2001 a new type of speed enforcement camera was trialled in the UK. It was an average speed camera geared to capturing speeding vehicles between two or more fixed points on a road. Since the successful conclusion of the trials in 2004, average speed cameras have been rolled out in many counties around Britain. Today, they are used to 'control' the speed of traffic on fast or dangerous stretches of road, and are claimed to help better protect the workforce at roadwork sites.
How average speed cameras work
Average speed cameras (known as SPECS) are mounted on overhead gantries or at the side of a road. To motorists they appear as surveillance cameras flanked on either side by smaller box-shaped cameras. They are often painted yellow for easy identification.
The section of road being monitored will have these speed cameras mounted at distances a mile or so apart. Together the cameras form a network - or as the police like to call it a speed controlled zone.
On passing beneath each camera in the zone every vehicle is digitally imaged with a time and date stamp. Numberplate information is recorded using ANPR technology, and this is fed directly through to DVLA. This way there is no mistaking who owns the vehicle.
As drivers pass under successive camera arrays the computer collating the data compares the time stamp on the images for each vehicle. If it detects that the time it has taken a vehicle to travel between two cameras is faster than the speed threshold set by the police then a fine is issued. What's more the driver might not even realise they've been booked for speeding as SPECS average speed cameras do not flash!
Speed thresholds
Of course, the big question is 'what is the speed threshold?' The answer is that different thresholds are set at different camera installations. Most police authorities do however try to work to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Speed Enforcement Guidelines. This is a formula used to decide what speeds become excessive enough to warrant action. The minimum enforcement speeds are below...
20mph zone - enforcement at 25mph
30mph zone - enforcement at 35mph
40mph zone - enforcement at 46mph
50mph zone - enforcement at 57mph
60mph zone - enforcement at 68mph
70mph zone - enforcement at 79mph
In a 40mph speed controlled zone with average speed cameras in operation then, these enforcement figures would suggest that you would need to drive in excess of 46mph between the cameras to pick up a speeding fine. But remember it records AVERAGE speed. Dropping down below 40mph as you pass the camera only to speed up moments later until the next camera is likely to win you a speeding fine. On the other hand, if you were to drop to 30mph for half the distance between the cameras, and then drive at 55mph for the other half you're average speed would come in at 42.5mph, meaning that you won't be booked...unless of course there is a police car following you!!

As usual, Amazon delivered the correct product on time. I have ordered hundreds of products from Amazon over the past 10 years, and returned a few, and never had an issue with Amazon.
As for the SanDisk Extreme III card; I purchased this particular card because it was one of the few which printed the r/w spec (>20 Mb/s) in the description. Most flash cards do not give the buyer any idea of how fast they are, and since this is a critical measure of performance, I would not buy any card without this info.
I'm using this card in a Nikon D80, and it is working very well.
If consumers refuse to buy cards (or flash drives) which do not specify the minimum r/w speed, the manufacturers will have to rethink their pig-in-a-poke advertising policy.

I was looking for a sdhc card for my D40 and this baby fit the bill just right.... you get a sdhc reader , the class 6 card itself and RescuePro ($40 value onto itself) . The software , rescuePro is on a mini cd and comes with Mac and PC versions with serial number .
Overall a great value , especially if you were to buy these items separately .

I wanted a birthday present for my son. It turned out to be exactly what we wanted: a rugged piece of good optics. The binocular has a threaded hole along the folding axis that makes it possible to attach additional gadgets.
